CRT 1st Grade Review - Freebie

It's that time of the year.  Time to review for the end-of-level, CRT (Criterion Referenced Test).  Can we ever get every child completely ready?  No.  Do we, as teachers, put forth every effort to get each and every one of our students prepared the best we can?  Absolutely.  Every little bit counts.  A friend shared these power points to help 1st graders get ready to understand the content of the test and know how to take a test.  I love the simplicity of these slides that focuses of the concepts.
They can be accessed on TpT, for free.  You can always print them off and put them under your document camera or use them in small group to review for the tests.

Bossy R - /or/ Dictionary Chase

Pairing up students with a pencil and clipboard in hand it was very challenging to search for words in a dictionary for young readers with the /or/ sound.  They had to really think about that distinct "Bossy R" sound.  They found many that were not so I had them write everything they found.  This was not an indepedent activity for 1st and 2nd grade students, it took a lot of guidance and time to process.  It would be a great challenge activity or to use in a center for independent readers.

I found it helped my young readers to gather at our reading rug to complete this activity as a whole class.

Bossy R - /or/ Spin Game

More Bossy R words with the /or/ family, using a popcorn theme!

Copy this game board off on cardstock and laminate for durability. Students will need a pencil and a paper clip to use as a spinner. There is an easy version and a difficult student along with a recording sheet for students to write down the real words and nonsense words they make.

This can be made into several copies for students to use as partners, it can be used in small groups or with individuals to help reinforce phonics instruction. Use it with one of your centers.

My Memories Suite Sample

As educators, we are caring, thoughtful, and nurturing.  Expressing that with students happens every day.  As part of a faculty it also becomes important to express thoughtfulness among staff members.  This builds up a tremendously positive school atmosphere where teachers love to come to school.  When playing a part in including everyone, invitations to staff events are often created and passed out.  Using digital scrapbooking makes this task simple, easy, and with little or no cost involved.  Here is an example for a digital invitation that can be sent out to faculty members announcing a baby shower.

My Memories Suite is by far the easiest digital scrapbooking program.  It's so affordable and there are many embellishments for school projects.  Click on the icon on the right nav bar to get set up with the My Memories software program and get $10. off!

Bossy R - /ar/ word slide

This is a fun hands on activity to help young readers with the Bossy R /ar/ words following the pirate theme.  If students have not used a word slide before, model for them how to slide and say the blended words.

Word slides are great to keep in students 'book boxes', review with a parent volunteer, use in small group instruction or in centers.

If you'd like a copy, it can be downloaded here at TpT or here at Teachers Notebook.

Website for Kids - time4learning.com

I have had parents request to have programs to continue throughout the summer, such as Success Maker reading and math computer tutorials by Pearson.  It is a researched based and is time well spent to augment a teacher's math and/or reading curriculum.  However, I hesitate to keep kids going with this during the summer or off track times because they may become bored or they may progress too fast and too high on an indpendent level without the other instruction that makes it all come together.  It's like getting a Hostess pie with no filling.  Thus, I give them a list of alternatives to Success Maker to look into for their child.  One online computer tutorial can be found at http://www.time4learning.com/.  As a teacher and a mom I gave Time 4 Learning a try with my own kids before telling parents about it and I found it is a good resource for keeping young minds sharp when school is out.  The upper grade levels had much, much more to offer than the lower grades, but their attention span and learning span is also broader at that age.  The trial offer at http://www.time4learning.com/ is a great way to give something new and different a try, besides it's free!
